Artists’ overview of Detroit

  • Lynn Crawford

is a fiction writer and in a recent article described the need to understand the multitude of artists’ stories that call Detroit home. This is a good place to start.

  • Nicole Macdonald

is a muralist and created a Portrait Series presenting Black Bottom and Paradise Valley. She released a drawn version, and a digital copy is below with explanations for each historical person of interest.

Painting Hidden History: Nicole Macdonald’s Detroit Murals

  • This portrait series was explored even further by celebrated writer and Detroit cultural icon Marsha Music, which was in her words “a lecture disguised as a one-woman show”. You can find more on her website: A Grown Woman’s Tales from Detroit.

  • Dolores Slowinski

is another artist / local art historian and she passed along her notes from a lecture (or a series of lectures?) that she gave about Detroit when I expressed interest in learning more about the art scene.

  • Aaron Timlin

is a playwright and busy body, who was known for running the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit. His family was also sued by the State of Michigan when . m a lecture (or a series of lectures?) that she gave about Detroit when I expressed interest in learning more about the art scene.

followed by other artists in the comments.

(The original Detroiter website was run by the Sousanis brothers who documented much of the art scene, today, much of it is documented by Rosie Sharp)

  • 2010 Motor City Revue @ Henry Ford Community College

(Excerpts from an exhibition catalog highlighting important artists in the region who also support other artists through curating/writing/positive word-of-mouth)

All documents are as they were sent to me / found / collected from local artists between 2009 - 2017.
